I’ve always struggled with what to give my children to eat when they come home from school- often they are quite hungry and tired, but I don’t want to give them too much or otherwise they wouldn’t eat their dinner….. So I need something quick, easy, healthy, nutrition rich that will still allow them to have their dinner a couple of hours later.
In comes the smoothie! I was talking to a friend in the holidays and she was saying how she’s been enjoying her smoothies every day and finally I got that ‘Aha-moment’!
Our smoothie has a few basic ingredients like just any old smoothie, but then I pack in yummy superfoods which makes it a valuable meal for the kids- and us!
Always use organic and raw/ unprocessed ingredients wherever possible.
Here’s the recipe:
Basic ingredients:
- Bananas
- other fruit, such as berries, mangoes etc. Organic OOb blueberries are readily available at Woolworths all through the year if there is nothing else in season that takes you fancy.
- Dairy of non-dairy milk of your choice
- Two tablespoons of soaked chia seeds per serving. I now keep a jar of soaked chia seeds in the fridge so they’re ready to go when I need them. Including these into our diet was the first reason I started making the smoothies, and now we just can’t get enough!
I usually use a combination of some or all of these, depending on what I have at home and what I feel like on the day. (if you click on the links you’ll get more information on the ingredients)
- Raw Honey
- Raw cacao nibs or powder
- Hemp seed oil
- Maca powder
- Superfoods for kidz Berry Choc Chunk or C Berry Blast
- Cinnamon
- Sunflower seeds or other nuts and seeds
- Goji berries
- Plain yoghurt
- You could also substitute the milk for some water or coconut water and add some baby spinach or other greens for a green smoothie!
You can also have these for breakfast, when you’re out and about or put some in the kids lunchboxes!
What do you like in your smoothies?
